Alex Sink was on hand with Barack Obama, the Dancing Senator, formerly known as the Astronaut Congressman, more formerly known as the Congressman in Khakis – Bill Nelson, and nearly 10,000 Democrats in Jacksonville yesterday.
That was the last rally for Obama in Florida and the much beloved Buzz was there providing us the rundown. She talked to the Buzz about getting elected statewide as a Democrat:
‘He doesn’t need to carry North Florida, but he has to get between 35 and 45 percent,” said Sink. That’s what her campaign shot for when she was running for chief financial officer, and things clearly played out as she’d hoped….But she says she thinks he’ll get it, since this election “is about pocket-book issues, at this stage.
Jacksonville, which is part of Duval county, has the highest rate of “infrequent Democratic voters” in the state. This might surprise you if you know anything about Jacksonville politics, which is solidly Republican.
But, because of the strength in Black voters in the Jacksonville area, the Obama campaign feels they should do well, if not win here. Sink nearly won Duval county, losing 51%-49%.
As everyone watches returns tomorrow, one thing we already know is that this election will teach us a lot about how to get Alex Sink elected in 2010. Which makes Steve Schale the guy to have a beer with on November 5.
